When I was teaching middle school band, my students and I were often frustrated by the lack of programming that reflected the many cultures present in our classroom. It felt odd that children from all around the world were expected to engage with music in which they felt no affiliation; why are children from Nepal expected to know Frère Jacques? While I certainly cannot bring music from every culture into the classroom, I felt compelled to at least share my culture with my students, who responded positively and enthusiastically.
The Korean American Songbook Project addresses the gap in modern educational band and orchestra literature through the creation of new, accessible works of music that reinterpret traditional Korean folk songs and children's songs. These works are available for purchase through my website, and ongoing consortiums for the creation of new works will be updated on this page.
